A gentle sound of water flowing through water pipes is perfectly normal and should be no cause for alarm. However, annoying sounds from your pipes, like banging, gurgling, or whistling, mean there’s something wrong. These sounds can not only deny you peace of mind, but they also indicate an underlying problem that needs to be fixed. High Speed Plumbing explains the top four causes of unusual sounds coming from your pipes and what to do.

High Water Pressure

Your water pressure shouldn’t exceed 80 PSI; otherwise, it can put undue stress on your pipes. Excessive water pressure can cause pipes to vibrate and lead to whistling or screeching noises. This occurs when water is forced through partially closed valves or narrow pipes. High pressure strains plumbing fixtures and can lead to premature failure. The solution is to install a pressure regulator to maintain optimal water pressure and prevent these annoying sounds.

Water Hammer

Water hammer happens when a valve or faucet is suddenly closed, causing the water flow to stop abruptly. The kinetic energy of the moving water creates a shockwave that slams against the pipes, resulting in a loud banging or hammering noise. This repeated impact can damage pipe connections, loosen supports, and cause water leaks over time. Our plumbers recommend you install air chambers or water hammer arrestors to cushion the shock and prevent this disruptive problem.

Loose Pipes

Do you hear a rattling or clanging sound when water is flowing? If that’s the case, you’re likely dealing with loose pipes. Your water pipes may come loose over time due to general wear and tear. It may also happen that they were not installed properly from the outset. While this problem may not be as alarming as excessively high water pressure, it should be addressed as quickly as possible to prevent further issues. Loose pipes can deteriorate much faster than properly secured ones. Call the plumbers at High Speed Plumbing for pipe repair if you notice disruptive and annoying sounds coming from your pipes.

Trapped Air

You may hear gurgling sounds coming from your pipes if air is trapped inside. This air usually finds its way into the plumbing system through various means, such as a partially blocked drain, a faulty vent, or issues with the main water supply. If you have a major leak somewhere along the water line, air can be sucked into the pipe as water escapes, creating those gurgling noises.

There’s a DIY method you can try before considering calling a local plumber for pipe repair. Turn off the main water supply and open all faucets, starting with the ones closest to the main water valve. Allow the faucets to run until they sputter and then stop. This should force the trapped air out of the pipes. Turn the main water supply back on and let the water run for several minutes to flush out any remaining air. Once the water flow is steady and free of sputtering, close the faucets. This should resolve the problem, but if it doesn’t, get in touch with a local plumbing repair service for an inspection.
